So since setting up on my own back in February I haven’t taken much of a break. It has been a whirlwind of onboarding new clients, working with existing ones and trying to squeeze in some business strategy along the way.

I decided that instead of writing off a week to take a break, and feeling the guilt of being away from my desk build-up, I would just take a ‘working holiday’ instead. Amsterdam was the obvious choice as it was only £88 return from Glasgow with KLM and the flight time is 1 hour.

I spent 5 days in Amsterdams De Pijp district, in the Bicycle Hotel which was fine. The area was more important than the accommodation to be honest. I worked in the Coffee & Coconuts cafe which is an amazing space (an old cinema) right off a busy street with a tram into the centre. The food is delicious and well priced, plus they have free Wi-fi and loads of areas to setup shop for the day.

Amsterdam was caught up in the European heatwave so it was pretty damn hot – particularly when you only have a fan in the hotel room… still beats being cold / wet I guess!

A cool area to check out is Pllek which is just 10 mins from Centraal via ferry. They have a man-made beach and huge artist spaces in the old shipping factories. Well worth a visit!

The ‘working holiday’ was really enjoyable, I worked at about 60% of a typical working day compared to being at home, but more importantly it helped me recharge with plenty of cycling and sightseeing.
